One of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations, Alicante is Valencia’s second largest city. A jewel of the Costa Blanca, Alicante is famed for its pristine white beaches, vibrant nightlife and relaxed atmosphere. Start your day with a spot of shopping on Rambla de Méndez Núñez and its surrounding streets, then make your way to Plaza de Carmen and prepare for the climb ahead. 166m above the city on Mount Benacantil, Santa Barbara Castle offers some of the best views of the city. If the walk seems a bit excessive (this is a holiday, after all), you can also take the elevator from the base of Mount Benacantil. If all that has you hot under the collar, head for a dip at Postiguet or Saladares-Urbanova beaches. When the sun sets, the action begins, and for a great night out you can’t beat the lively bars lining the medieval winding streets of historic El Barrio. Just be sure to line your stomach first, from a plate heaving with paella alicantina to calamares rellenos, or stuffed squid. If you choose self-catering Alicante accommodation, you can also make the most of the excellent Mercado Central de Alicante (Central Market) and its tempting array of fresh meat, seafood, cheeses, fruit and vegetables. Not only will you save money on dining out, you’ll avoid the tourist crowds and get to shop just like the Alicante locals do.
When to go to Alicante
Alicante is a true year round destination, with excellent weather in all seasons – it only rains around 20 days each year. Summer, spring and autumn are the best time to plan an Alicante beach holiday, while in winter tourists can swap the cold weather at home for mild, sunny days.
Getting to and around Alicante
Most tourists arrive in Alicante via flights to Alicante Airport, although it’s also possible to arrive via train from Madrid and Barcelona. Once in Alicante, most tourist attractions are within walking distance of each other, although public transport options include bus and tram.
