Explore Amsterdam

Think Amsterdam, and images of tulips, clogs and windmills might spring to mind, or perhaps girls in windows and smoke-filled coffee shops. But there’s far more to the capital of the Netherlands than its enduring clichés. Attracting over 4 million international tourists each year, visitors discover a city of immense beauty, from the 165 sparkling canals to the green glory of the Vondelpark. Visit Prinsengracht 263, the home where diarist Anne Frank and her family hid for two years during the Second World War, catch an eyeful of art at the Van Gogh, Rembrant or Rijksmuseum museums, or perhaps take a tour of the Heineken Brewery. Most tourist attractions are within half an hour’s walk of each other, with almost all the action focused in the Old Centre, and a boat tour along the grachtengordel (girdle of canals) that guards this area is a definite must do. Plus, if you choose your Amsterdam accommodation right, the end of the day doesn’t have to mean the end of your sightseeing – there are lots of Amsterdam apartments overlooking the canals available to rent.

When to go to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is at its best from May through to August, when the weather is mild and you’re most likely to come across a festival or parade of some description. Winter can be lovely too, particularly if it freezes enough to allow skating on the canals. If it’s at all possible though, time your holiday for Queen’s Day on 30 April, when the city erupts into a giant orange party come garage sale.

Getting to and around Amsterdam

Just 18km from the city centre, Schiphol is the fourth-busiest airport in Europe. Visitors can also arrive into Amsterdam via train or motorway. Once you’re there, foot or pedal power are your friend, particularly as you can cross the Old Centre in 30 minutes and be in the city’s outskirts in double that.
