Explore Bruges

Belgium’s most popular tourist destination, Bruges is quaint, beautiful and completely un-missable. See the relic (reputedly a vial of Jesus’ blood) in the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and marvel at Michelangelo’s Madonna With Child sculpture at Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk. Beer lovers can learn about the art of Belgian beer making at Brewery De Halve Maan, while chocolate fiends can get a fix at the Choco-Story Museum. For incredible views of the city, climb the 366 steps to the tower of Grote Markt, or take a tour by boat or horse drawn cart. When hunger strikes, you’re in luck – Belgian food is a tourist attraction unto itself. You can’t go past a steaming bowl of moules-frites (mussels and fries), washed down with a glass of that famous Belgian beer. If you choose self-catering Bruges accommodation, you can also take advantage of the weekly Market Day in the main Market Square. Stock up on fresh, seasonal produce and you’ll not only save money on dining out, but will get to shop amongst the locals for a true taste of local Bruges life.

When to go to Bruges

Bruges is a wonderful year round holiday destination, with something to offer in every season. Summer is peak tourist season, so time your travel for spring or autumn to enjoy mild weather and less crowds. However, a Bruges holiday in winter can be delightful too – imagine skating on the frozen canals. Beautiful.

Getting to and around Bruges

Most tourists arrive in Bruges via train or flights to Brussels Airport or Ostend-Bruges International Airport. Once in Bruges, bus is the only public transport option, although the city is easily and best explored on foot.
