Anybody who is thinking of visiting Carcassonne in the southwest of France will be doing so for one reason - this famous medieval city is mostly made up of the magnificent Carcassonne Castle, boasting 56 watch towers and a 2 mile long wall surrounding the whole city. This brings more than three million visitors a year, browsing the cobbled streets in the many tourist shops. The traditional Cassoulet, a pork stew like dish, is widely served and well worth a try, and the weekly market is a great place to pick up a freshly baked baguette. If you tire of the crowds, a visit to the neighbouring lower town, whilst less spectacular, is still an interesting place to spend an afternoon. Carcassonne apartments are the best way to experience authentic French living.
When to go to Carcassonne
Carcassonne generally has quite mild weather in all seasons, summer is high tourist season and can be unbelievably busy which makes spring or autumn ideal. However, if you can brave the crowds, the brilliant festival de la cite in July takes over, hosting music, street performers and a great atmosphere. In winter, a temporary ice rink is set up in the square, adding even more magic to this already beautiful city. Be warned though, many businesses operate shorter opening hours in winter months.
Getting to and around Carcassonne
Carcassonne Airport is easily accessible from most of Europe. A free shuttle operates to the city centre and around the city centre in high season. In winter the city buses can be used but they do not operate on a Sunday. You can also arrive by train if you buy a French rail pass.
