Barcelona’s quieter and smaller neighbour, the ancient city of Girona is the ideal city break destination offering a mild Mediterranean climate, all the rich tastes of Catalan tapas and an easily accessible local airport. Experience Girona like a local
As is the case in many Spanish cities, food is a passion of the locals in Girona and it’s not just the usual Catalan tapas they indulge in but also the Basque equivalent of pintxos and local favourite restaurant Txalaka is regularly heaving by 10pm, the usual time that locals eat out, especially during Girona’s warm summers. Mimolet is a popular restaurant located within the old city walls, which serves locals and visitors the local foods they expect and look out for the dorade white fish, which is caught locally. With a number of beautiful churches to admire inside or out, and for a different cultural experience check out the Banys Àrabs, a 12th century baths built in Romanesque style which includes both hot and cold water baths and a sauna. Another unusual highlight of Girona is the Museo del Cinema, Spain’s only museum dedicated to the history of the cinema, which is a family-friendly place to take children with lots of interactive exhibits. Although Barcelona’s is assumed to be the capital of Spanish Catalonia’s nightlife, Girona still has a pulse once night falls, with bars like Café I Cu-cut keeping local professionals happy and Maiden’s proving to be one of the best rock and metal bars in northern Spain. Another way to experience Giron a like a local is to visit the bi-weekly market held on the banks of the River Ter, which has stalls selling virtually everything from fresh foods to clothes and shoes.
