Accommodation in Hvar - Travel Guide
This idyllic harbour-town on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic is scented of lavender; as the rocky surrounding hills are blanketed in purple. Popular with yacht-goers for years, the Croatian town of Hvar is situated on the south coast of the island in a picturesque, sheltered bay – offering safe haven for boats year round. A regular catamaran ferry service also connects Hvar to the mainland and surrounding islands.
With a mild Mediterranean climate and a rich cultural history, a holiday in Hvar is one that can be enjoyed by anybody, whether holidaying with the family or a special someone. The main draw for visitors here is most definitely the elegant beaches, with Hvar’s luxurious white sands and crystal clear waters. Travelling into the town proper, one finds the influence of classic Italy evoked in the narrow, cobbled streets and stone bricked buildings of this olden-days Venetian port.
One of the earliest tourist destinations in Europe (the town has been providing services to visitors since 1868), Hvar town is a protected Cultural Heritage area with many cultural sights, archaeological sites and a theatre often cited as being the oldest in Europe. The 14th century defensive walls are still standing, and along with two imposing fortresses (one containing an observatory) on the hills above, a walk along Hvar’s well-trodden paths makes for a fascinating journey to ancient times.
With many museums, the Hvar Municipal Theatre, the Gallery of Modern Art and lots of lively, friendly shops selling a variety of arts and crafts – any hunger for culture is easily sated. The town’s bars and restaurants provide an exciting (and delicious) social veneer to Hvar and a vibrant nightlife, especially during the Hvar Summer Festival from late June to late September.
