Start spreading the news – New York is the ultimate holiday destination. From Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, you could spend a lifetime here and still have plenty to discover. Hit Downtown to take in Wall Street and the World Trade Centre Site, before heading to super chic Soho or perhaps the West Village for a spot of shopping – Marc Jacobs lovers beware. For a cheaper but no less sweet treat, you can’t go past a cupcake from Magnolia Bakery, made famous by those other New York icons, the fab four from Sex And The City. If hunger’s really set in, though, it’s all about the pastrami on rye from Katz’s Deli in the Lower East Side, famed for a certain scene in When Harry Met Sally. Over in Midtown, catch a game or a concert at Madison Square Garden, join the throngs of tourists beneath the illuminated billboards of pulsating Times Square, or give your credit card a workout at Saks or Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue. Uptown you’ll find Museum Mile and Harlem, where you can’t beat a Sunday morning spent taking in the sweet sounds of a gospel choir. If you choose self-catering New York accommodation, you can also make the most of the city’s incredible farmers markets, including the ever-popular Union Square Greenmarket.
When to go to New York
The best time to holiday in New York is spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild and the foliage and flowers make for a gorgeous stroll around Central Park. Winter is cold – bitterly cold – but can you imagine anything more beautiful than New York under a blanket of fresh snow? Temperatures soar in summer, which can be a great excuse to retreat to the cool air conditioning of shops and department stores.
Getting to and around New York
Flights arrive at New York’s three major airports, John F Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International. Once you arrive, part of the New York experience is hailing and catching an iconic yellow cab, and riding the fast, reliable subway.
