Explore Paris 5 – Pantheon
Found in the Latin Quarter of the 5eme Arrondissement, the neo-classical Pantheon is the resting place of some of Paris's most renowned former residents, including Voltaire and Zola. As well as being a beautiful building, dating back to the late 1700s, and an important landmark in its own right, it is a great starting point for exploring this famously bohemian section of Paris. Although it is south of the Seine, the Pantheon is in a good position to see all the essential tourist hotspots on the northern side and Notre Dame. With universities all around, there is a wide choice of inexpensive accommodation, as well as informal cafes and clubs to relax in.
Experience Paris 5 - Pantheon like a local
Do visit the large Jardins du Luxembourg, this is a very tranquil setting with formal gardens, sculptures and fountains. Locals come here day and night, just to sit and chat, as well as play tennis, boules and chess. Children will enjoy the puppet shows that are on here regularly. From the Pantheon itself you can see the Eiffel Tower and take a walk down to the Sorbonne, one of Europe's oldest universities - some of the buildings date back to the 13th Century. If you want you can carry on walking following an informal route north towards Notre Dame Cathedral and from there over the river, taking a route up the Champs Elysee to the Arc de Triomphe. This is a long enough walk to take a whole day; you'll probably want to get the Metro back. Back near the Pantheon, because lots of university buildings are close by, there are plenty of relatively cheap cafes around to grab a snack. For a choice of good restaurants, head for the streets between the Sorbonne and the Ile de la Cite.
