Explore Paris 18 - Buttes Montmartre
The 18th Arrondissement, to the north of the city, is one of the best known districts of Paris; popular with tourists since the days of Toulouse Lautrec and still now, thanks to fans of Moulin Rouge and Amelie. As well as the beautiful Sacre Coeur, dominating the area from its hilltop, this is traditionally the artists' quarter and the home of the colourful (but seedy) red light district. Parisians love it here too, enjoying the local wine and food in the excellent restaurants of the northern end of Montmartre. And you can escape the hordes in the peaceful Parc des Buttes Chaumont to the east.
Experience Paris 18 - Buttes Montmartre like a local
Ask the locals what to do in Montmartre and they will give you a list of things not to do. They say don't bother with the Moulin Rouge - over-priced food, inauthentic entertainment devised for American tourists. Similarly, they say keep away from Pigalle, there's nothing romantic about the red light district. However, visiting the Sacre Coeur is a must for the views (do try and check a visibility forecast though, the city can get smoggy) - take the funicular railway, free with a Metro ticket, to the top. It's open from 6am to 11pm, so getting there early or late you can avoid the crowds. La Marche aux Puces is the biggest flea market in Europe, it's still possible to find something special there, and then follow the locals to "NoMo", north Montmartre. This is where they go to eat and shop, try Avenue Rachel or take a picnic to the Place Jules Joffrin. Don't miss the best art in the city; at Place Jehan Rictus there's a huge mural of "I love you" written in over 300 languages.
