Pena is in the centre of Lisbon, north of Rossio and the Castle of Sao Jorge. If you're looking for a peaceful place with a friendly feel and the chance to indulge yourself at some of the best restaurants in Portugal, you must choose accommodation in Pena for your Lisbon holiday. This is a largely residential neighbourhood, great for families with less of a touristy feel than other parts of the capital. Sitting on the Santana hillside it is even cool in the evenings, thanks to the Atlantic breezes and there are lovely gardens to chill out in for a really relaxing city break.
Experience Pena like a local
How you get around Lisbon from Pena depends on how energetic you are feeling. You can either take the Elevador do Lavra south (it's over 100 years old), or walk down the medieval stairway all the way to the transport hub of Rossio. There are 186 steps, so you'll probably want to take the elevator on your return journey. Pena isn't the destination for clubbers, this is a quiet area with no all night clubs! It certainly compensates with the pedestrianised street, Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, which is a foodie's heaven. Award-winning outdoor restaurants line this street, including Gambrinus, Solar dos Presuntos and Bom Jardim: Perfect for a romantic meal out. Officially called Jardim Braamcamp Freire, the large park dominating the area is known to the locals as Campo dos Mártires da PátriaIt, it's fabulous for relaxing in and entertaining children with its play area, sports pavilion and lake. While you're here you will enjoy fantastic views over the city and once you've got downhill you can easily get around the city by foot, train or bus.
