Il Torrino it's a charming country retreat in the ancient and out-of-time Sardinian village of Santa Barbara, facing the sea on the beatiful mountains of Capoterra, at only 20 minutes by car from the beatiful and alive city of Cagliari and the Elmas Airport and just 4 Km from the sea. The beaches of Nora/Pula and Chia are just 20-30 mins by car.
The property it's a small tower (hence the name "Il Torrino"), articulated on 2 floors. It was an old shed for horses that has been graciously restored with original fornitures and materials.
INSIDE:
Il Torrino has everything you need for a comfortable stay. There are 2 rooms with old fireplaces, one of them includes a small kitchen. There is a bathroom with a shower and a cellar.
You can go from one floor to the other with a traditional wooden stair or you can just access each room from the terraced garden.
The thick stone walls will keep you fresh during Summer, while the 2 fireplaces will be good companions in Autumn-Winter (we'll provide some wood for you at your arrive).
Smoking inside it's not allowed, but the garden is accessible from both rooms of the property.
OUTSIDE:
The terraced garden outside it's populated with olive and fruit trees and gives spectacular views on the mountains and the old village. There are also two pergolas for dining and plenty of other spots to sit down and relax.
If you like cooking and barbecues, you will feel at home thanks to the large barbecue built with local stones and the traditional Sardinian wood oven where you can make fantastic pizzas, bread and so on (ask us for tips on where to find excellent local meat, fish and other ingredients).
The property is only a few metres away from a pictoresque creek and the Romanic church of Santa Barbara (1281 A.C.)
THE VILLAGE OF SANTA BARBARA
It's a very small village whose name, according to the legend, comes from Barbara, a Christian girl that has been decapitated by Romans in 300 A.C. a few metres from the village (where there is still a little chapel). Her blood generated a small spring that is active also during Summertime.
In 1281 Christians monks built a small church in her memory and around it grew the rest of the village, whose ancient buildings have been modified during the centuries and now appear with a variety of architectural styles from late '700 to early '900 Liberty villas.
THE SURROUNDINGS
The village is very close (5 mins by car) to a nice residential area with all services (Restaurants, Shops, Pharmacy, Bank etc.), and the sea is just 4km away. It's only a 15 mins drive to the fantastic beaches of Nora and 30 mins to Chia. The weather is usually sunny and you can go to the sea from April to October.
If you like trekking, mountain bike and nature the property is located just on the border of the Regional Park of Sulcis, a large, unspoiled forest, which includes also the WWF reserve of Monte Arcosu, where Sardinian deers and many other unique species live. You can also literally walk out of the gate and follow one of the old paths to the top of Monte Santa Barbara, from where you will have a wonderful 360° view on Cagliari and the gulf.
Cagliari and its attractions are only 20 mins away, so it's quite easy to leave the peace of Santa Barbara and have a romantic dinner in front of the sunset at Bastioni, visit the old town with its pictoresque streets, churches and museums or just go shopping in one of the many boutiques you will find around.
If you are interested in archeology and the ancient Sardinian culture, you have the choice to visit the Nuraghes of Barumini (1 hour drive), a UNESCO protected site, the Nuragic/Phoenician/Roman town of Nora (15 min) or the Archeological Museum in Cagliari (20 mins) plus many many other small sites all about 1 hour drive from the property.
