Explore Rome

Visiting Rome is like exploring a living postcard, with Italian icons at every turn. From nuns licking gelato to pretty girls on Vespas, Rome’s residents are as recognisable as its monuments. When on holiday in Rome, you cannot miss the Colosseum, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and should throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain and watch the sunset on the Spanish Steps. If you time your travel so you’re in Rome on a Wednesday, you can have an audience with the Pope in the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square, before admiring Michelangelo’s genius in the Sistine Chapel and climbing to the top of the dome of St Peter’s Basilica. Of course, some of Rome’s best attractions aren’t buildings at all. Try the authentic, wood-fired pizza at Da Remo in Testaccio, before indulging in the city’s best gelato at Gelato di San Crispino. Breakfast isn’t a big deal in Italy, so choosing self-catering accommodation in Rome is a good option to save money (and room) for the main event of the day – lunch.

When to go to Rome

The best time to travel to Rome is March to June (spring) or September and October (autumn), when the skies are blue and the weather mild. Winters aren’t particularly cold, averaging around 10-15°C, but November and December can be wet.

Getting to and around Rome

Flights to Rome arrive at two airports, Leonardo da Vinci (more commonly known as Fiumicino) and Ciampino. You can also arrive via the main train station, Stazione Termini, where there are regular trains to and from many European countries, major Italian cities and other regional towns. Once in Rome, getting around is made easy by a good public transport system, particularly buses and trams. If catching taxis, be sure that you choose a white or yellow cab with the letters SPQR on the front door, which indicates that its licensed.
