Experience Sacramento like a local

Learn about the dramatic history of the neighbourhood, and Lisbon in general, by visiting the Carmo Archeological Museum, a former convent. You can still see signs on the building of the massive damage the 1755 earthquake did to downtown Lisbon and this part of the city suffered further devastation with a huge fire in 1988. On the positive side, this led to a re-building project and rejuvenation of the Chiado area - it has only recently become popular with tourists. In the Carmo and Garrett Streets you'll find lots of shops, selling everything from fashion items through to homewares and food - it's a shoppers' paradise. Around here are lots of friendly coffee shops, the haunts of the intelligentsia in days gone by. The most famous is called "A Brasileira", more renowned for the well-known thinkers it hosted rather than anything to do with the quality of its coffee! The National Theatre and the country's premier modern arts gallery are also based here. Take the "steampunk" Santa Justa lift to the higher ground in Lisbon; it's a tourist attraction in its own right.
