If you want a holiday that combines culture, relaxation and shopping, then staying in an apartment in Sacramento, south-central Lisbon, will suit you down to the ground. In the Chiado area, Sacramento is home to some of the city's best galleries and museums, has a history as the place for intellectuals to meet up and is ideally situated to explore the rest of the capital. With its mixture of new and old, you will not only get to relax in comfortable accommodation, but stay busy exploring unique boutiques and high end designer stores. Don't miss the quirky Santa Justa lift...
Experience Sacramento like a local
Learn about the dramatic history of the neighbourhood, and Lisbon in general, by visiting the Carmo Archeological Museum, a former convent. You can still see signs on the building of the massive damage the 1755 earthquake did to downtown Lisbon and this part of the city suffered further devastation with a huge fire in 1988. On the positive side, this led to a re-building project and rejuvenation of the Chiado area - it has only recently become popular with tourists. In the Carmo and Garrett Streets you'll find lots of shops, selling everything from fashion items through to homewares and food - it's a shoppers' paradise. Around here are lots of friendly coffee shops, the haunts of the intelligentsia in days gone by. The most famous is called "A Brasileira", more renowned for the well-known thinkers it hosted rather than anything to do with the quality of its coffee! The National Theatre and the country's premier modern arts gallery are also based here. Take the "steampunk" Santa Justa lift to the higher ground in Lisbon; it's a tourist attraction in its own right.
Renting holiday accommodation in Sacramento
This part of Lisbon has been subjected to more re-building works than any other part of the capital, due to the fire that ripped through the neighbourhood. The buildings were renovated sympathetically meaning that there is a lot of accommodation in Sacramento with traditional facades, yet bang-up-to-date, modern interiors. Where you stay in Sacramento is purely down to your preferences and budget, there's no part of this small neighbourhood where you're far from the action, or transport connections to the rest of Lisbon and the airport. Lisbon is an atmospheric city, ideal for romantic breaks, or just general sightseeing - search through our fantastic selection of accommodation (large and small properties) to take the first step towards discovering one of Europe's most dramatic capital cities.
