Experience Salamanca like a local

Home to one of the world’s first Universities, much can be learnt from a stay in Salamanca, not least how beautiful the carefully preserved Gothic and Renaissance buildings are. Often considered to be one of Spain’s most beautiful townsquares, the 18th century Plaza Major is Salamanca’s unofficial centre and is stunningly lit up at night. More architecture to admire can be found at the two Cathedrals, Vieja and Nueva (old and new), which are next door to each other. It’s well worth climbing the tower at the southwestern corner of Cathedral Nueva in order to enjoy views over and across Salamanca. This view becomes extra special at dusk as the falling sunlight sparkles against the sandstone giving off the golden hue that Salamanca is famous for. As is the case with most Spaniards, Salamancans treasure eating out together and in the summer months the streets are filled with tables and chairs and Spanish families talking animatedly. Mesón Las Conchas serves local dishes at affordable prices but to splash out a little try Casa Paca, rumoured to be a favoruite of the current Spanish King. If you’re staying in one of the many beautiful holiday villas in Salamanca, ensure you buy local ingredients to cook with like the cured meats the region is famous for as Spain’s biggest pork producer as well as the hinojosa de duero, a local cheese. To party like a local it’s all about the “Litre Bars” in Plaza de San Juan de Batista, so-called because they offer litres of beer at surprisingly cheap prices, a reminder that Salamanca is a student town.
