Take a winding, anti-clockwise route through Alfama's medieval streets up to the Castle of Sao Jorge, one of Lisbon's major tourist attractions and it is worth it for the amazing views from one of downtown Lisbon's highest places. You can relax in the green space here and take a meal in the restaurant; locals recommend you do this in the evening to watch the night fall over the city. There are plenty of places to eat out too back near where you're staying, including the São Cristovao Restaurant, a well-regarded place to sample local delicacies. To the west of São Cristovao e São Lourenco you get to Figueira Square where there are lots shops and cafes and it's a popular spot for teenagers to meet up. There's a famous bakery called Confeitaria Nacional here; they've been selling delicious cakes since the 1820s. Go to Martim Moniz by day to sample African and Goan food, or pick up some more unusual souvenirs. This area has something of a reputation as a red light district, so it's best avoided after dusk.
