Explore Southwark
Southwark, in south London - but only just, it is on the south bank of the Thames - is a fantastic place to stay when you take a holiday in London. Not only are some of London's best attractions right here, as well as some of the capital's greatest views, but there is a wide range of high quality accommodation in Southwark, to suit different budgets and needs. Millions flock to Southwark every year without realising they are doing so. From the riverside views enjoyed at the Thameside properties, through to trendy Borough and quiet, leafy Dulwich, Southwark is a great destination.
Experience Southwark like a local
Even the locals never tire of the awesome views across the River Thames from Southwark. Whatever the weather, take a gentle stroll along the South Bank, taking in the Tate Modern, the Globe Theatre, Imperial War Museum, City Hall and looking across to St Paul's Cathedral and other sights. Even though this is popular with tourists, the wide open walkways mean it's always possible to go at the pace you want. Borough Market is a major pull for foodies - most of the stalls close mid-afternoon, so get here early in the morning and you will also avoid the tourist hordes. There are plenty of good restaurants around here, fairly reasonably priced for the capital, surprising considering the area's enduring popularity. You can follow Borough High Street south from here to visit Elephant & Castle, with some old school London boozers along the way. Allow at least half a day to make the most of the Tate Modern - you can also tour the Globe during the day, but it can busy, so do book ahead.
