Explore Strasbourg

The capital of the Alsace region of France, Strasbourg straddles France and Germany both physically and culturally. Nestled on the banks of the Rhine, this beautiful city is famed for its Grande Île, which was the world’s first city centre to be classified in its entirety as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here tourists will find Cathédrale Notre Dame, home to an astronomic clock and France’s highest cathedral tower, as well as the Maison Kammerzell, Palais des Rohan and Musée Alsacien. Head to the small area known as Petite France to wander the cobblestones of some of Strasbourg’s most picturesque streets, or take some time out in beautiful Orangerie park. If all that fresh air has left you hungry, head to a winstub, or traditional Alsatian eatery, to sample some typical Strasbourg fare. Specialties include sauerkraut (choucroute in French), flams (tartes flambées in French) and baeckeoffe, a beef and pork stew. Whatever you order, be sure to wash it down with a glass of Alsatian wine, whether gewürtztraminer, riesling or pinot gris. Strasbourg is also known for its Kronenbourg and Fischer beer. If you choose self-catering Strasbourg accommodation, you can also take advantage of the incredible farmers’ market, and stock up on everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to cheese and foie gras.

When to go to Strasbourg
