Explore Zagreb

Croatia’s capital has long been a fashionable tourist destination with holiday apartments in Zagreb becoming a very popular way to experience the city like a local. With Roman roots, Neo-Gothic bell towers and Renaissance style palaces, Zagreb has a range of architecture and sights to see, including the very recently opened Museum of Contemporary Art, which is the largest museum in the country. Often considered the gateway to Eastern Europe, Zagreb is a fast-moving, full of life city which has excellent shopping, bars and restaurants to offer the culture junkies or the hungry foodies.

Experience Zagreb like a local

One of the most important rituals locals follow is that of špica. Zagreb’s inhabitants religiously observe this tradition of meeting with friends and family for a coffee on Saturday morning. To take part in this perfect people watching opportunity seek out a spot across the main square from the Dolac market, Zagreb’s oldest and busiest daily market. Getting around Zagreb can be an entertaining experience in itself with free rides in a vintage 1920s tram on offer on Sundays and riding the “Old Lady”, known affectionately as the shortest cable car in the world. This hill side funicular has been transporting Zagrebians between the upper and lower parts of the city for more than 100 years. Zagreb is also perfectly positioned to explore the mountain range of Medvenica, which is popular with skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer. Just a short bus ride from the city centre you can be at the base of a 1000m climb up the highest peak of the range known to the locals as Sljeme, which literally means summit. As the night falls don’t go to sleep without trying out Zagreb’s nightlife, which it is fast becoming famous for. A range of bars keep locals happy near Tkalčićeva Street, which is considered the city’s prettiest street.

Renting holiday accommodation in Zagreb

To experience the city like a local, choose self-catering accommodation in Zagreb, which will mean you have the freedom and flexibility to see lots of the city and surrounding areas. Holiday apartments in Zagreb are surprisingly affordable and are often spacious, stylishly decorated and conveniently located close to the sights. Search HouseTrip’s properties in Zagreb to find a newly renovated slick city apartment or a comfortable 19th century family home in the suburbs to suit you for your holiday in Croatia’s capital.
