THE LOFT:

The gargantuan loft itself is an extremely rare find in New York. Converted from a former sewing factory, the space still contains most of its original detail and is the epitome of old school Brooklyn. From its original pane windows in the hallway to the squeaky hardwood floors, its character lies in its imperfections. The living room provides the perfect opportunity to relax on its comfy couches, to use the wireless internet or hook up to the projector and watch a movie. You can even connect your iPod into the speakers and relax to your own tunes. The kitchen is fully stocked with every utensil and appliance any foodie could need and they are at your disposal. This loft is not a hotel, hostel or B&B, but rather my home that I’ve opened up in order to create an international community of travelers. Eclectic guests from all over the world gather in this shared space offering a unique, yet totally New York living experience. The house is quiet during the day, allowing for cat naps between outings and bustling in the evening as travelers return home from their adventures. Guests have the opportunity to bond over their adventures in the city, compete against each other in often hilarious games of Taboo, and even break bread during the occasional randomly thrown together dinner party. (Neighbors Jesse and Matt stop by often to mooch a meal or borrow something). Fellow Brooklynites also often stop by for impromptu dinner parties, movies nights or Sunday brunch. Staying here allows your travels to be full of new people and not just new places.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD:
Clinton Hill / Fort Greene is one of New York’s most dynamic and well-rounded neighborhoods. Combining the perfect mix of historic buildings and artistic dwellers, it is well known as one of the coolest neighborhoods in New York City.

Starting as far back as the 1840’s this area was known as a fashionable area for the social elite of Brooklyn who would commute into Manhattan by stagecoach. By the later part of the century, the area was lined with magnificent mansions owned by millionaires. Many of these buildings still remain, as do the immense brick factories that boomed during the industrial age. One of the oldest chocolate factories was known for being one of the sole producers and distributors of Tootsie Rolls, and currently houses the spa and lounge Body by Brooklyn. Most of these large factories have been transformed into loft spaces and apartments, much like my own!

Only 20 minutes from downtown Manhattan. Walking distance to wonderful restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and a great flea market called, The Brooklyn Flea.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
There are two subway lines close to the loft, as well as several NYC buses, and of course, our famous taxis. It’s easy to get to all the best spots in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

• C Train at the Clinton / Washington (20 minutes to downtown Manhattan)
• G Train at the Classon Ave (Takes you to other great neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Cobble hill etc)
• Many bus lines
• Taxis

NYC/Manhattan Hot Spots:
• 20 minutes to downtown Manhattan
• 25 minutes to 14th street / Chelsea/Meat Market areas of Manhattan
• 30 minutes to Times Square
• 40 Minutes to Central Park

THE LOFT / BUILDING:
The loft is 464m²/ 5000 sqft and has 5 bedrooms in total. I share this gargantuan space with the eclectic group of well traveled, well read, open minded GROWN UPS that visit me through Airbnb. I enjoy hosting dinner parties for my guest as well as game and movie nights. I work mostly from home so the space is usually pretty quiet during the day (great for cat naps and sleeping in!). The kitchen is stocked with almost any cooking utensil and/or appliance known to man and you are welcome to use them. There is an endless supply of teas and coffee in the kitchen and I usually offer a homemade banana bread, lemon pound cake or whatever baking recipe I’m experimenting with that week to go with it. The living room is super spacious with comfy couches to lounge on, a television, DVD Player for movies and speakers to play music from your ipod. Another large wall of windows in the living room gives the space a warmer hue than expected for such an industrial loft. More exposed steel beams and a very long brick wall with a fire door that leads nowhere. But I love it so just kept it. All this description to say make yourself at home. Hopefully I have everything you need to do so and if not just let me know what I can do to make your stay more comfortable.

This is a true old school NEW YORK CITY industrial loft building. A former sewing factory that still retains most of its original details. Experience true NYC loft living.

THE NITTY-GRITTY:

This is where all the dirty details of New York loft living are fully disclosed. We like our guests to have a good idea of what to expect and what is expected of them. This ensures that we all enjoy the experience of sharing this amazing space. So far we’ve found that the people who enjoy this experience the most tend to be creative, social, open minded, open hearted, explorers, who love music, are good sharers, story tellers and generally love life & people. As such you are treated as personal friends, encouraged to make yourself at home and partake/ participate whenever you choose. A few things to keep in mind when living communally. Not everyone is on the same schedule. This means that others may be sleeping while you are awake chatting on (website hidden) to the folks back home or with the new friends you’ve made here. In turn, someone may be making coffee, washing dishes and doing laundry while you are trying to recharge your batteries. Unfortunately this space is a bit closer a giant cavernous cave than a cozy cubby. As such soundproofing has proved to be quite difficult. Call it our tragic flaw. In lieu of an entire gut renovation we’ve found it helpful to have folks travel with ear plugs so the activities of others don’t interrupt your recharging time. And don’t worry if you forget yours we always have plenty on hand.

THE LOO:

Keeping with true old school New York style living means we have only one bathroom (for now... working on permits for an additional loo by fall 2012)
As such this part of the communal living experience begs a bit of that open mindedness and flexibility we mentioned earlier. Currently the bathroom features two sinks, one toilet and one shower. Each guest room is also equipped with a mirrored vanity area and hair dryer which helps keep bathroom time short. It is important to remember that our guests often operate according to varying agendas/ time schedules (from early birds to night owls). In combination with the general amenable nature of our travelers and the other wonderful feature of staying in such a unique space, the demand on the bathroom is hardly ever an issue.

Séjour en avril 2013

Narmeen Lovely loft, very stylish, big and near a metro. On the face of it it seems like a good alternative to a hotel and it ought to be as its similarly priced. Jane one of the hosts was friendly and welcoming. We stayed three nights without issue then went on a road trip and came back to stay another three nights. Only Shell the owner had double booked with another couple and we had nowhere to go. She arranged for us to stay with one of her friends in a guest house set up. Not nearly as nice if I'm honest and certainly not an NYC loft. We didn't make a fuss as we didn't really have a huge deal of choice. To be honest I would have never booked this place and felt a bit cheated. We decided to not let it ruin our trip. So I can't really recommend it if you want the professionalism, relliability and peace of mind of a hotel. However it's nice, the owner was apologetic and offered to make us brunch and tried to sort out her mess. It might be fine and you might have a great stay unlike us.
