A holiday in Penzance, in south-west Cornwall, is as much about the places you can get to from here, as things to do in the town itself. Not that Penzance isn't interesting in its own right (it is), but by staying in accommodation in Penzance you can so easily get to some of the most interesting places in the West Country. Penzance is where to go to get across to the Isles of Scilly and to visit the most westerly point of England. Experience Penzance like a local
The attractive seafront promenade has been enhanced by a new pier, making strolls from the town onto the sandy beaches a pleasant way to spend a sunny day, or take the Granite Coast Walk. Penzance has a number of historic pubs, mostly found in the backstreets and many serving food. You'll get the most out of a Penzance holiday with a car. To the east is St Michael's Mount, a fairytale castle off the coast. It's open throughout the summer, accessed by a cobbled causeway - but only when the tide is out! In the other direction you get to the picturesque village, Mousehole, with its smuggler's cottages and coves. Stopping for a meal at the waterfront Ship Inn is recommended. Most people head to Land's End, but a longer drive to Lizard, England's most southerly point, one hour away, is much more atmospheric. If you're not going to enjoy the micro-climate of the unspoilt Scilly Isles you can still take boat tours of the coast, or have day trip in cosmopolitan St Ives, one hour north by car.
