Description from owner

Description

It is a wooden mansion situated next to the old Ortodox Monastery. Built in 1934, by a Turkish-Greek architect, our mansion is a historical accomodation. It is on a quite and peaceful corner of the island.Beach and markets too near.

Only two square miles in size, Buyukada, population 7,000, is the largest Island in a green, hilly archipelago in the Sea of Marmara. The island is called Prinkipo in Greek and Prince's Islands in English. It takes 80 minutes by ferry from Kabatas (nearby Taksim) and 35 minutes from Bostanci (Anatolia side of Istanbul). Our house is 5 minute walk from the port, cafes, shopping market and restaurants.

It is a wooden mansion situated next to the old Ortodox Monastery. Built in 1934, by a Turkish-Greek architect, our mansion is a historical accomodation. It is on a quite and peaceful corner of the island. It is also walking distance away from beach and town center. The mansion is near to the transportation facilities: cityline ferry port and horse carriage terminal station.

You should keep in mind that cars are not allowed on the Island. There are horse carriages for transportation or possibility of renting bike. There are many historical places to see. You can visit Trotsky's house in the Island. Leon Trotsky (Russian Marxist revolutionary and theorist, Soviet politician, and the founder and first leader of the Red Army) was deported from the Soviet Union in February 1929. His first station in exile was at Büyükada off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, where he stayed for the next four years.(Black and white photo in the album, Leon Trotsky on the boat with his wife and security guard) Visitors can take a fayton ride to get acquainted with the island, and to see the konaks (villas) and kosks (mansions) nestled amid the piney, palm-fringed hills. For the first half of the 20th century, the island was popular among prosperous Greeks, Jews, Armenians and Turks. Buyukada has 3 Ortodox, 2 Catholic churches, 1 Synagogue and 3 mosques.
