“A Dream”

Reviewed 21 Oct 2013

Casa das Hortenses on the estate of Quinta das Faias, Camacha, Madeira, was exactly as described and absolutely charming. Set in wonderful grounds, away from mass tourism, beautiful and quiet surroundings full of flowers, excellent hiking opportunities and teeming with collected plant specimens it was peaceful, beautiful and a total getaway. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing seemed too much trouble for the owner Rita and Filipe and the care of both is excellent during the holiday. A lovely place at a central place! Close to Funchal, airport and the mountains, to come back after a day walking or a visit to busy Funchal. As an architect I appreciated the quality of the recovery of the old house, the high level of construction, its thermal insulation and soundproofing, and its decoration, contributing to have a wonderful time. The house is equipped with everything you need to make a meal, and has TV, wireless internet and a slove, a beautiful garden, good service, it really is a dream! Angela, was very friendly and took care for cleaning and everything. Nearby there is a big supermarket and some local restaurants. Madeira is amazing for hiking in the mountains, swimming in the sea, it has everything and the local firewater, poncha, is not to be missed - strong but delicious! There are good restaurants nearby and nice little bars in Funchal but it was so nice to buy fish in the market and the local garlicky bread by the roadside and eat it at home by the fire. Can't wait to come back, will recommend to all my friends!
