Description from owner

Description

Enjoy your own private castle with an intimate, inviting atmosphere and laid-back way of living. Castel d'Escales is ideal for group gatherings and special get-together celebrations and is perfectly suited to travelers wanting to spark their imagination with a sense of place and contact with locals.

Adjacent to a nature reserve with lush rolling green hills yet walking distance to an authentic Catalan village and only 8km to the beautiful, medieval walled city of Girona and some of the area's top destinations for extraordinary food and wine. Award-winning, family-friendly beaches, gorgeous Mediterranean coastline with hidden coves (think the Côte d'Azur at a fraction of the price), and Spain's #1 rated golf course with Stadium layout are 30mins away.

A listed historic monument in Spain and Catalonia dating from the 10th-century, the unique architectural elements of the castle's original structure have been beautifully blended with a contemporary, fuss-free aesthetic tailored for your comfort and enjoyment. The castle is a self-catering, private luxury retreat with all modern amenities and is attractively decorated with comfortable, original furnishings. The property is unique in that, while self-catering, we have a local English-speaking host / concierge to help your group settle in, answer questions, and provide insider tips to the very best of the area. Catered meals can be arranged with traditional seasonal or bespoke menus - the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion.

Property Highlights: completely private, rural setting yet only 10mins to Girona and 30mins to the coast's prettiest beaches; fully catered meals available; circular stone tower's sweeping panoramic view to the Pyrenees; Wi-Fi throughout; private pool with bar and lounge area; well-stocked kitchen with updated appliances and induction cooktop; large terrace and dining areas perfect for entertaining; stocked wine cellar available on an honor system; beautiful and comfortable decor.

Architectural Features: 10th-century circular tower squared by 14th-century original stone walls; wood-beamed and stone vault ceilings; medieval courting seats; arched doorways and windows; castle arrow loop windows.

Located in Spain's region of Catalonia, midway between Barcelona and the French border, Castel d'Escales is 10mins to Girona and 30mins to the most picturesque and unspoiled part of the Mediterranean's Costa Brava with small secluded coves fringed with pristine golden sand beaches, clear turquoise water, and traditional fishing villages. Castel d'Escales provides a peaceful and intimate haven convenient to everything this inspiring and spectacular part of Spain has to offer.

Extraordinary restaurants are only 15mins from the castle including two buzzy Girona destinations for foodies: the Roca brothers' El Celler de Can Roca, 10 years in the World's Top 5 Restaurants, and Rocambolesc Gelateria, Jordi Roca's unique Willy Wonka-inspired ice cream shop.

Memorable Musts:

Try the hot ice cream-filled brioche bun or 'Anna Rocks' Cava popsicle with bubbles at Rocambolesc.

Enjoy a glass of wine and some tapas at a sidewalk café surrounding Girona's elegant Plaça de la Independència.

Explore the coast and savor freshly caught seafood, superb in its simplicity, at a restaurant that's nestled on the beach in a secluded cove.

Bookings are for a ONE WEEK MINIMUM stay MAY thru OCTOBER for groups of up to 14 guests. Children are welcome.

This site provides a calculation on a per night cost which is not what we provide. The castle cannot be booked on a nightly room-by-room basis.

The rental fee reflects the price of booking the ENTIRE property for a ONE WEEK MINIMUM. You do not share the castle with anyone else during your stay.

We look forward to hosting you here in Catalonia.

“Castel d'Escales - A Little Piece of Heaven!”

Owner's reply: Carolynn - It was a pleasure to host your group! We’re delighted you had a wonderful stay and enjoyed both the castle and surrounding area. We fell in love with the castle at first sight and it’s a real treat for us to welcome guests and share the property’s unique charm and history. You discovered Jools (and Bessie) are the icing on our cake and provide a special quality that makes your stay more comfortable and helps everyone really savor their experience. It adds another dimension when you’re “in the know” and can really connect with a place and join in its culinary adventure. Our desire is for every group’s stay to be as relaxing, fun and delicious as possible and we’re very happy to know you returned home carrying fabulous memories that will last. Best wishes, William & Sheila

“Magical, cool and comfortable castle”

Owner's reply: Thank you for taking the time to let us know how much you enjoyed your stay. We discovered the castle on our honeymoon and it has always seemed magical to us so it’s lovely to hear you and your guests felt that special quality, too. Jools (and Bessie) are our Super Secret Sauce - you can’t believe how good it is until you’ve tried it! We all truly care about our guests and are constantly seeking to make their castle experience as relaxing, memorable and delicious as possible. Some of the improvements we’ll be making include upgrading the cooktop to something simpler and more practical. The current halogen European-style cooktop looks good in a showroom but is not so easy to use when cooking. The outside space around the pool and bar will be landscaped to conserve water and provide shade to make the entire pool area as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. Thank you again for your valuable suggestions and feedback which can only make our future guests even more comfortable as a result! Best Wishes, William
