Description

Welcome to our spacious comfortable 3 bedroomed bungalow. The elevated position gives views over the Skye and the Glen Elg peninsula. The house was awarded 4 stars by VisitScotland in its first season and continues to impress guests.

The large main room is comfortably furnished with a multi-fuel stove, sofas, chairs, TV and the large dining table. The main window looks out onto Lochalsh with views to Skye and Glen Elg. We have provided a telescope and binoculars.

A smaller cosy sitting room has the satellite TV and the WiFi hub. There is a selection of books and games available.

There are three bedrooms which can be configured as one double and two twins or two doubles and one twin. They all have oversized crisp white cotton linen for that touch of luxury, plenty of storage and blackout blinds/curtains.

The kitchen is very well equipped with good quality equipment to enable visitors to take full advantage of the wonderful local produce available. You'll find tea, coffee, sugar and some oil and spices in the cupboards.

There is a shower room and a full bathroom.

A utility room has a washing machine and tumble dryer and there is plenty of both indoor and outdoor drying space.

A lockable garage is available to store outdoor equipment such a bicycles and kayaks and has extra drying space.

An outdoor table and chairs are provided in the enclosed south facing garden so you can enjoy this secluded spot.

There is plenty of space to park.

Wifi, a cot, highchair, towels, linens and a modest stock of wood for the fire is available free of charge. We make an small charge for dogs who are welcome subject to a few rules (not permitted in bedrooms or on furniture). Assistance dogs are of course free of charge.

Getting around

The house is just 500m above the A87, the main route to Skye so you can readily arrive by long distance bus from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness. But to be frank, public transport in the Highlands isn't great so we recommend your own transport. There is an extensive set of paths/mountain bike trails above the house.

Interaction with guest

We are always just a phone call away in case of difficulties and are happy to suggest things to see/do in the area to supplement the extensive literature available in the house.

“Great base for exploring”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2018

At the top of our list when booking was outlook from the property. We were not disappointed, the view from the front window was outstanding. Couldn’t quite see Skye Bridge from inside but the views across the loch to the island were just gorgeous. Ever changing and one you just couldn’t tier of watching. Although we did spend time over on Skye, lovely walks up Old Man of Storr and around Elgol, the majority of time was spent walking the area immediately out of the front door. Amazing walks through the forest tracks and over to Balmacara Square including some challenging scrambles down through the forest towards Kirkton (we are not in our first flush of youth!). The property itself is first class and equipped with everything you could possibly wish for. There is an abundance of local maps detailing walks etc with information on all local amenities. We couldn’t fault the property and would absolutely recommend it to anybody wanting a comfortable well equipped base to either venture from or just sit and enjoy the fabulous surroundings. Our only drawback to the holiday was finding somewhere to eat out that would take dogs, we had our Border Terrier with us and we really struggled to find somewhere that catered for us. That said there is a well stocked Spar at the bottom of the track (although a little pricey even for a captive audience) and there is a Co-Op in Kyle of Lochalsh about 5miles away and Varis House kitchen is so well equipped it wasn’t really that much of a hardship to cook in the property.

Response from the manager Thank you so much : yes, we often get 'complaints' of slow starts to the day as people spend too much time just watching out of the window. Hope to see you again soon.

“Holidays in Scotland”

Reviewed 24 Sep 2015

We liked the seize of the house and the rooms. The kitchen is well equipped and the utility room as well. So are the other rooms. The view from the living-room is fantastic even if there isn't any sunshine. Debra gave us a warm welcome with a nice bottle of wine and some cookies. Even tea, coffee and a lot of other stuff was provided. We had a wonderful time there.

Response from the manager Thank you. Glad you had a good stay.

“OUTSTANDING”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2015

Varis is in the perfect location for exploring the surrounding area, within very easy reach of Balmacara Square, Plockton, Skye, Eilean Donan Castle etc. The house itself was in lovely condition, with beautiful views over the loch, and as soon as we closed the gates it was safe for our two dogs to roam around the generous garden. The owners seemed to have thought of everything, making the house really feel like a home from home - the Welcome folder was full of really useful and helpful information about places to visit and places to eat, though we tended to cook our evening meals at the house. The kitchen has everything you could need and it was a pleasure to look out over the loch while having our meal. There is an extremely well-stocked Spar (with Post Office) within easy walking distance, next door to the Balmacara Hotel where there is a very popular restaurant, a friendly bar and an outdoor seating area overlooking the shoreline. We will definitely be back!

Response from the manager Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

“It was a fabulous location”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2015

We really enjoyed our holiday. The bungalow was lovely, very comfortable and in a fabulous location. It was very quiet and peaceful. There were lots of lovely walks around the area and we enjoyed watching all the birds in our garden. We were able to tour around and the scenery is absolutely terrific. The local supermarket had a good selection of beer! Our hosts were very obliging to us as we had to cancel our first holiday we booked due to a surprise stay in hospital and they kindly allowed us to re-book without losing our deposit, which was a very generous thing to do. The only slight criticism is that when we stayed we had a very cold snap of weather and it wasn't always as warm as we would have liked in our bedroom although the lounge was lovely and warm.

Response from the manager Thanks for that. Sorry about the cold bedroom : guests can control the heatng and in addition, just in case of need, there is a very efficient fan heater provided. I must put a note about the fan heater in the House Folder. Thanks for the prompt.

“Lovely setting for a relaxing holiday”

The house was ideally situated for visiting Skye and Wester Ross, it was in a nice secluded position far enough from the road to be quiet and was very well appointed, the attention to detail was very impressive, the beds were very comfortable and everywhere was very clean.

Response from the manager So pleased you enjoyed your stay. There is plenty to do in the area - rain or shine.

“Lovely house in a great location!”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2014

We really enjoyed our stay at Varis. It's in a good central location that is perfect for exploring the area. The house had everything we needed and was clean and nicely decorated. The beds were comfy and there were loads of wardrobes for storage space. The local shop is within 5 minutes’ walk of Varis and is well stocked with everything you could need. We have family in the area that we visit each year, so hopefully we will stay again!

Response from the manager Those comments are very much appreciated and we will continue to work to make Varis a great place to stay.

“A clean and comfortable home from home.”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2014

Really enjoyed our stay at Varis during August 2014. The house was very clean and well equipped with all the things you could possible need and more. The views were stunning and there were easily accessible walks on the doorstep. It is in an ideal location for exploring the Isle of Skye and surrounding area. The property provides extremely comfortably facilities which creates a home from home feeling when staying there. The snug has Wifi facility and the bedrooms are spacious with extremely comfortable beds and luxurious bedding. The kitchen provides all the usual home comforts and there is also a large utility room which is useful for storing/drying outdoor clothing. The owner has thought of all of the needs of the visitor and has provided extensive information about the local area and walks available. This is definitely a property I would revisit and would recommend it to other visitors to the area.

Response from the manager Thank you. We look forward to seeing you again.
