The Anchorage is the owner's private holiday residence, available to discerning guests and completely redesigned in early 2018. It is superbly located in an enviable position right on the foreshore of one of the best locations in Scotland, All the rooms in the house overlook Loch Alsh and the heather clad mountains of the Scottish Highlands on the mainland beyond.
The cottage is the perfect all-seasons self catering holiday accommodation for seaside-loving, mountain-walking, wildlife-watching, peace-searching people who love wilderness beaches, gastronomic delights and a touch of the Celtic.
The garden has a gate which leads straight onto the private foreshore, from where you can fish, have a glass of wine, or just sit and watch the yachts, naval and fishing boats come and go, including the occasional submarine or cruise liner. Opposite is the lighthouse-keeper's cottage on Eilean Bàn where author Gavin Maxwell (Ring of Bright Water) lived. All rooms overlook the water which is within about 30 feet from the house. In the summer the sun sets behind the majestic Skye Bridge which is about a kilometre away (no traffic noise- this is Skye!!)
The house itself has recently been refurbished to a high standard and guests enjoy the use of superfast broadband, Alexa sound system, underfloor heating, Aga cooker, zinc-topped kitchen refectory table digital TV and plenty of interesting books.
The house is perfectly suited for one or two couples, but we also have a single camp bed for one additional person over the age of 10 if required.
Kyleakin is perfectly situated on Skye, just a few minutes from the bridge and within easy reach of the varied attractions of all parts of the island. Although very peaceful, there is always something going on in the channel or the fishing harbour just a moment's walk away.
Unfortunately, due to dangerous rocks and sea access right by the house we are unable to accommodate children under ten years of age. The house is also unsuitable for unaided wheelchair users due to access via steps.

The Anchorage has a wonderful view over the harbour at Kyleakin, across to the mainland and to the Skye bridge and Raasay island beyond. There are window seats that you can lie on to read the many interesting books on the area (or slow Agar cooking) and watch both the weather and boats come and go. This is the best part of the Anchorage. When we arrived, the house was quite cold because the underfloor heating that underlies the main kitchen/window seating area was on a timer and was not going to fire for another hour or so. (This is the main form of heating along with the Agar in the heart of the kitchen area, and there is a firebox in the lounge.) However, Richard, who was always helpful and kind, explained how to override the setting so we could get it going and once we had the hang of that, we were warm enough. The upstairs bedrooms were warmed by electric oil/fan heaters on thermostat controls. I was hesitant about using the Agar for all of our cooking (there is no conventional oven or cooktop), but I found that once you relax into it (take your time!) the results were delicious. Also, you can fold your washing up and leave it on the top overnight and wake up to dry and warm clothes! However, the constant fuel smell that accompanies the Agar was something to get used to, for us anyway. The beds (two large doubles) are topped by thick foam toppers which wasn't quite to our taste, so that is something to be aware of if you are overly particular like us: I admit that most people would probably like the experience of sinking into them. The house was well stocked with cooking utensils etc., but I was a bit surprised that there weren't a few complimentary staple-type supplies available. There was only half a bottle of sunflower oil and a little flaked sea salt by the stove. The nearest supermarkets in Kyle and Broadford are good and we found we were always nearby one of them on our travels and could pick up what we needed. Skye itself was the star of the show and despite a week of rain we managed to hike up into the Cuillins (I recommend walkinghighlands.com which provides info on walks of all kinds and lengths) and visited the extremeties of each coast. We also took the ferry over to Rassay and visited the clearance village of Hallaig (recommended). We also discovered the Cuillin brewery which makes a very nice black beer, 'Black Face', which kept us watered while we were there. Skye is such a unique place and the wonderful books Richard has tucked into the storage of the window seats whets the appetite for further journeys into the Hebrides. The Anchorage also occupies a unique position on Skye. Thank you Richard for sharing it.
Owner's reply: Thanks for your detailed feedback anyway. I'm sorry if the house was cold when you arrived - the Aga had been serviced that day and the doors had probably been left open. The house is usually toasty warm when our guests arrive! The Aga servicing probably also accounts for the whiff of oil, but I understand this eventually disappeared. Maybe the engineer also left the Aga on a lower setting than the one we leave it on as it is very efficient and is certainly no slower than any other cooker - often faster in fact! I wish you had let me know at the time! There is now full central heating upstairs too! Re the beds, these are usually regarded as luxurious, but guests are always free to remove the memory foam toppers if they prefer a firmer bed. Location perfect at south side of the island next to the bridge. Warm, cozy and clean with good amenities. big sitting area and two decent sized double bedrooms.
The cottage was everything we could ever want in a holiday let and then some. It was clean, warm and very comfortable. Lot's of little touches to make our stay one of the best we've had in Scotland. The location was great for exploring the wonderful Isle of Skye and also the mainland, Fantastic view from all the windows of the Skye Bridge, passing boats and seals swimming around,

Located right on the waters edge the Anchorage proved to be a tranquil spot even though it is at the harbour. Nestled away you can enjoy watching the wildlife and boats go by, the view at the Anchorage from bathroom, 2 bedrooms and lounge are spectacular. The accommodation is extremely comfortable and has everything you need for an enjoyable stay - no curtain or blind in the bathroom/shower was a 1st but not a problem. Local amenities are good if basic. There some exciting things to see and do on Skye however you do have to travel more than you think to get there. Highlights; old Man of Storr, Elgol, Sleat white Beach, Dunvegan coral beach and Castle Eilean Donan. The Anchorage was a great place to stay, with exceptional views, all mod cons and everything you needed or would want.
