Getting around

Most people come to Lamego - a thriving town 10 km south of the Douro River - to see (and possibly climb) the amazing Baroque staircase that climbs zigzag down to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church. The center of the old town has a mix of narrow, winding streets and tree-lined avenues, with medieval landmarks illuminated by views from almost every angle. The connoisseurs also go by the foxtail of Lamego, the city's famous sparkling wine, which provides an excellent break. Lamego is a natural base for exploring the semi-destroyed monasteries and chapels in the vicinity, one of which dates back to the time of the Visigoths.

Interaction with guest

About 12 kilometers from the banks of the Douro, Lamego offers a variety of tours and tours that offer remarkable panoramic views over the extensive valleys planted with vineyards that produce the famous Port wine.

“A lovely spacious house”

Reviewed 30 Oct 2018

We stayed here in October and rented it for the week, making this our base from which to visit other attractions in the Douro region. The house is very big and was exceptionally clean. Comfortable white fluffy towels and complimentary bathroom soaps were left out for us and a bottle of wine and mineral water as well. The hosts who greeted us were very kind, having waited till rather late for us to arrive since we had got delayed en route. The house has a slightly retro feel to it which we thought added to its charm and the garden makes a fantastic place for al fresco dinning. We were lucky enough to have good enough weather to eat outside at lunch but watch out as the temperature can drop in the evening ( this was October ! ) we also were quite high up in the Monsanto region with lovely mountain views. We enjoyed the antique nature of the furniture and the lovely formal dining table made a great focus for family dinner and conversation. If we return to the North of Portugal, this is where we will stay again!
