Experience Nova Scotia island-living at its finest at the Fennel Old House. Our renovated turn-of-the-century home (accessible by car) sits on a spectacular multi-acre oceanfront site, just 30-feet from the water. Bordered by woods on three sides, it overlooks a picturesque rocky cove and wide bay. The only house you can see from our front deck is a mile across the bay! Guests have called the 180-degree view one of the most amazing they've ever experienced. Included is a brand new dock where you can tie up a boat and swim.
The LaHave Islands: A Unique Destination
From the minute you approach Crescent Beach, a popular 1.5-mile long beach which leads from the mainland to the LaHave Islands, you know you've come to a special place. After driving down the wide beach (or taking the road behind it) you follow a winding road and cross two bridges. You encounter postcard views along every turn -- colorful houses, old fishing wharves and fishing and pleasure boats passing by. At the end of the road you'll find our house.
We're a 7-minute drive from the Lighthouse Route, which runs the mainland between Halifax and Yarmouth... a half-hour's drive from Bridgewater (the area's main shopping/restaurant area)... a 40-minute drive from the historic seaport of Lunenburg and tourist town of Mahone Bay... and an hour-and a half's drive southwest of Halifax and the airport.
Enjoy the outdoors from our sprawling yard with flower gardens, 5 sundecks (including a roof deck), floating dock, screen house and screened gazebo by the shore. Swim off the dock, catch crabs, pick wild blueberries and raspberries, play croquet and badminton, and swing on our tree swing. Or just relax listening to the seagulls and watching fishing boats in the bay. In the evening, enjoy spectacular sunsets over the cove and light a fire in our outdoor fire pit to roast marshmallows.
The Fennel Old House can comfortably sleep 7 adults in 4 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a large, attached changing room, which can also accommodate a crib. The other 2 upstairs bedrooms have three twin beds. A downstairs bedroom has a double bed and adjoins the bathroom.
Our home features large-window views, wood floors, period-moldings, wainscoting and tongue-in-groove walls throughout the upstairs. Come home from a day at the beach or touring to warm in front of one of two wood stoves. The first floor also has baseboard electric heating with thermostats in each room, and portable, safe, high-powered heaters on the second floor. Eat your meals at the dining room table while enjoying a wide open view of the cove and bay through a large picture window.
Our kitchen has just been renovated. It has new cabinets, beautiful Brazilian soapstone counters, new stainless appliances (including a glass-top stove, french door fridge with icemaker, dishwasher, farmhouse sink, and new dim-able, 3-color temperature lighting under the counters. It's fully equipped with a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker and grinder, food processor and quality kitchenware. We wish you happy cooking!
The living room has a 27' TV with satellite service, DVD/ & VCR players, and a stereo with CD/tape deck. We provide bedding and towels, other supplies such as toilet paper and a washer/dryer. Yes, we have wireless internet and cell service is very good. We do not allow smoking of any kind inside our home.
Locally, there are many attractions. Half a dozen beaches are within a 5 to 10-minute drive, including Risser's Beach Provincial Park, which has a fine-sand beach with lifeguards, boardwalk along a back marsh, visitor's center, a snack bar and shower facility. On the island are many quaint paths and roads to walk or bike, a marine museum, community hall, government wharf, boat launch, a church and a cemetery. On nearby Crescent Beach, people park their cars on the beach, walk their dogs, surf, kite-board, stroll the beach at sunrise and sunset and swim in the waves.
Several fishermen and their families still live on the islands, some who will take visitors out fishing or on island tours (ask us). Locals also love to share their community's history through casual encounters along the road and at events like the Monday morning coffee hour.
Along the Lighthouse Route on the mainland are lots of craft and antique shops, artist studios, restaurants, museums and historical sites. Take in musical events, county fairs, farmers' markets, art shows, ox pulls and more. For sporting activities, rent kayaks, golf at several courses, go horseback riding, and enjoy the resort at White Point Beach, where a day pass let's you use the pools, yard games and boats.
And don't miss the most famous bakery in Nova Scotia, the LaHave Bakery (15 minutes away).
A Quality Rental Experience
We've been renting our homes for nearly 20 years to people from places as far away as Germany and Hong Kong. We strive to make our guests' stays completely enjoyable. After you reserve, we will mail you driving instructions, information about the house, and things to do in the area. The house will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and if something should occur during your stay, we have a handyman on standby and a variety of service specialists who should be able to fix any problems quickly. We also provide excellent communication by phone and email prior to and during your stay.
Our rental rates are priced similarly to other higher-end Nova Scotia oceanfront homes. We recently reduced our rates by 20% to help compensate Canadians, who are the majority of our guests, cope with the rising US dollar. The total rent we charge is in US dollars and includes all taxes.
Nightly and weekly costs vary depending on the time of year and the duration of your stay. To see how costs compare at various times of the year, click on "show additional rate details" (which is a link just below our calendar on the main page). Pets are welcome for a non-refundable $100 fee. If staying for more than one week, the rate is $100 US less for each additional week. We take:

We own "SKYVIEW ON LAHAVE ISLAND," a more modern, house next door. It sits on the highest point of the island, with 360-degree views above the treetops of the ocean surrounding the island.
