SkyView on LaHave Island is a 20-year old home perched on the highest point of LaHave Island. Our house is built high like a castle on a hill. Drive your car up to the second floor door and cross a small landing to the house. Enter and encounter a 2-story atrium with large-window views of the ocean. Other windows reveal 360-degree views of the mostly uninhabited, wooded LaHave Islands, with picturesque coves, island channels, sprawling bays and the vast Atlantic Ocean. House has all new windows, shingles and decks with glass panels.

The LaHave Islands: A Unique Destination

From the minute you approach Crescent Beach, a popular mile-long beach which leads from the mainland to the LaHave Islands, you know you've come to a special place. After driving down the wide beach (or taking the road behind it) follow a winding road and cross two bridges. Take in postcard views along every turn -- colorful houses, old fishing wharves and fishing and pleasure boats passing by. At the end of the road you'll find our house.

Convenient Location

We're a 7-minute drive from the Lighthouse Route, which runs the mainland between Halifax and Yarmouth... a half-hour's drive from Bridgewater, which is the area's main shopping/restaurant area... a 40-minute drive from the historic seaport of Lunenburg and tourist town of Mahone Bay... and an hour-and a half's drive southwest of Halifax and the airport.

The Outside

Enjoy the views from two first floor decks (one is very large), and from a second story balcony accessible from the master bedroom and another bedroom. Relax. Listen to the seagulls, watch fishing boats in the bay, see deer which roam the property, experience both sunrises and sunsets from several vantage points, and enjoy brilliant stars in black skies.

The Inside

Come home from a day at the beach to warm yourself in front of an airtight soapstone wood-burning stove in the great room. Our home can sleep 8 adults in 3 bedrooms (all with skylights) and in a den with a pull-out couch (see bedroom description for types of beds). We provide bedding and towels, and a washer/dryer. The house also has baseboard electric heating with thermostats in each room.

The kitchen is large and equipped with a stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, food processor, quality kitchenware and a small breakfast table. The dining room has a large mahogany table with antique chairs. The den has a 36-inch flat screen TV with satellite service, and a stereo with speakers wired to the atrium. The master has a 36-inch flat screen TV with local channels. Enjoy playing ping-pong on a full-size table in the basement. We also have wireless Internet and the cell service is very good. We do not allow smoking of any kind inside our home.

The Area

Locally, there are many attractions. Half a dozen beaches are within a 5 to 10-minute drive, including Risser's Beach Provincial Park, which has a fine-sand beach with lifeguards, boardwalk along a back marsh, visitor's center, a snack bar and shower facility. On the island are many quaint paths and roads to walk or bike, a marine museum, community hall, government wharf, boat launch, church and a cemetery. On nearby Crescent Beach, people park their cars on the beach, walk their dogs, surf, kite-board, stroll the beach at sunrise and sunset and swim in the waves.

Several fishermen and their families still live on the islands, some who will take visitors out fishing or on island tours (ask us). Locals also love to share their community's history through casual encounters along the road and at events like the Monday morning coffee hour, serving the best home-made scones and sticky buns around. The community hall also hosts guest lectures and other events.

Along the Lighthouse Route on the mainland are lots of craft and antique shops, artist studios, restaurants, museums and historical sites. Take in musical events, county fairs, farmers' markets, art shows, ox pulls and more. For sporting activities, rent kayaks, golf at several courses, go horseback riding, and enjoy the resort at White Point Beach, where a day pass let's you use the pools, yard games and boats. Don't miss the most famous bakery in Nova Scotia, the LaHave Bakery (15 minutes away). Sit down in its quaint dining area and enjoy an amazing breakfast or lunch!

A Quality Rental Experience

We've been renting our homes for nearly 20 years to people from places as far away as Germany and Hong Kong. We strive to make our guests' stays completely enjoyable. After you reserve, we will mail you driving instructions, information about the house, and things to do in the area. The house will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and if something should occur during your stay, we have a handyman on standby and a variety of service specialists who should be able to fix any problems quickly. We also provide excellent communication by phone and email prior to and during your stay.

Our Rates

Our rental rates are priced similarly to other higher-end Nova Scotia oceanfront homes. We recently reduced our rates by 20% to help compensate Canadians, who are the majority of our guests, cope with the rising US dollar. The total rent we charge is in US dollars and includes all taxes.

Nightly and weekly costs vary depending on the time of year and the duration of your stay. To see how costs compare at various times of the year, click on "show additional rate details" (which is a link just below our calendar on the main page). Pets are welcome for a non-refundable $100 fee. If staying for more than one week, the rate is $100 US less for each additional week. We take:

Minimum Stay

During June, July, August and September, the minimum stay is one week. We rent from Saturday to Saturday. All other times of the year the minimum stay is 2 nights. Check in is 4 p.m. Check-out is 10 a.m.

If the Week or Days You Want are Booked

We also own "THE FENNEL OLD HOUSE," a renovated 100-year old home next door. It sits on a picturesque cove overlooking a wide bay. The property has gorgeous views from many vantage points, including from 5 decks, a gazebo, and dock. It sleeps up to seven people at $750 to $1750 per week.

House rules

Our guests must be 21 years of age or older. We do not allow more than 8 people sleeping in the house unless we make special arrangements for that. Our guests may invite friends or family to join them during the day but we ask to be notified when the total number of people in the house exceeds 8 people. We allow pets but the guest must pay a $100 U.S. non-refundable pet fee. Any disregard for the above mentioned rules will result in an automatic loss of the $200 deposit.

How do damage deposits work?

Occasionally, you will pay a damage deposit up front as part of the total rental cost. In this case, the owner has 10 days after you check out to report any damage. If they don’t, we’ll return your deposit. If their claim is successful, we’ll deduct the agreed cost and return the remainder.
