Description

H' House

This house is situated in suburban Maastricht, just south of the city's center. It was designed for a couple—a dancer and an actor, who are also landscape architects—and is located within an existing formal garden that the owners had cultivated over the years. Composed of two concrete floor slabs wrapped in an all glass skin that varies in shades of opacity–from transparent to opaque–the interior is organized so that it assumes the characteristics of a single, open, loft-like space. The two exceptions to this completely open living situation are the contiguous volume of the upper story bathroom, which cantilevers over the terrace entry off the kitchen below, and that of the front entry, which projects from the main volume to create a roof terrace. The house's staircase is suspended from the first level so that it does not touch the ground floor; its lower portion is composed of movable units that also function as storage for the ground floor kitchen and living space. Small rectangular columns support the house's concrete slabs. The owners are able to reconfigure their interior spaces, due to the numerous curtains–whose tracks are recessed within the floor slabs–and the lower components of the staircase; ephemerally defining rooms reflective of the seasonal changes within the surrounding formal garden.

Wiel Arets Architects (WAA) is a globally active architecture and design firm, whose work extends to education and publishing, with studios located in the Netherlands and Switzerland. Comprised of an international team of architects, designers, thinkers, and administrators, the firm is currently involved in large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. Its architecture and design emerges from research and a balance of hybrid-programming solutions, which adapt to and anticipate future contextual change. The output of WAA is acclaimed for both its craftsmanship and tactility. This digital publication is a globally accessible resource for information on the organization, and output, of WAA.

Wiel Arets was born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, in 1955. His father was a printer and his mother was a fashion designer, and from them he learned both the love of books and reading, as well as a deep respect for craft, materials and making. Heerlen, an ancient town founded by the Romans, located in the Limburg region in the south of Holland, near the borders of both Belgium and Germany, was from 1896 to 1966 the center of an important coal industry. As a result, the people of Heerlen were drawn from all over Europe, and together formed a strongly multicultural society. Arets grew up speaking four languages; French, German, Dutch and the regional dialect of Limburg. One of Arets’ grandfathers was a farmer, from whom he learned a respect for the unique aspects of the landscape of the Limburg region, while his other grandfather was a mining engineer, from whom he gained an abiding interest in technology.

Maastricht:

a true star among cities

Welcome to Maastricht, one of the oldest cities

in the Netherlands – a city that has ripened well

with age, like good wine, with complex and lively

cultural overtones added over centuries by the

Romans, Germans and French. This rich cultural

palette is the secret behind the city’s attractiveness,

drawing visitors to the historic city centre

and a wealth of museums and festivals – making

each visit a fascinating new experience.

: city

But Maastricht is also a vibrant

and contemporary city with a

rich landscape of upmarket as

well as funky boutiques and a

wide range of restaurants &

cafés serving everything from

local dishes, hearty pub food,

and great selections of beer

to the very best haute cuisine.

And of course its location also

makes Maastricht special – in

the heart of the South Limburg

hill country and nestled in the

Meuse River Valley. Is it any

wonder that Maastricht is such

a great place for a day out, a

weekend getaway, or a longer

holiday?

Maastricht: a true star

among cities.
