Description

The space:

This tree house is completely off grid with screened in jalousie windows and sliding doors. Water is from rain and electricity is from solar. Flushing toilet, shower, and sink. There are many Ohia and Guava trees throughout property. Feel free to pick and eat any accessible guava on the property. Lanai is nice and big (8' x 16') with amazing views. At night you can leave the bamboo blinds up and feel like you are high in the trees while you see and hear the nature around you; feels truly magical! Situated in the jungle and private, however with quick access to highway 11 and many destinations. There are multiple familys of wild pigs with many baby pigs running around. These pigs are harmless and will run as soon as they hear/see you. Very few mosquitoes at this elevation compared to most other locations.

THINGS TO CONSIDER PRIOR TO BOOKING:

-STEEP STAIRCASE (12 ft in air): Have to be in good physical condition to carry luggage up staircase. Be cautious while walking up stairs, watch your step, & hold onto handrails.

-COMPLETELY OFF GRID: Never had a problem with low battery. Normally always have full or close to full charge (3 red lights) even with heavy usage. However please be mindful with electricity usage; Please no heavy electrical devices (i.e. hairdryers) & don't leave lights on. Also please be considerate of your water usage

-NOISES: There are many variety of noises from all the different animals in the jungle especially at night (i.e. Coqui frogs, pigs, Hawaiian song birds, ect). Depending on the time of year you will also encounter light thumping on the roof from falling guava from the trees. Another noise you will hear is the water pump whenever the water is running.

-I have never had any problems with theft many months we have stayed here. Have even left car unlocked and open many nights. However please be on safe side and take anything important with you.

Interaction with guests:

Although I am not on the island currently I can be reached anytime by text, call, or email. I have a great caretaker available if needed. I also have extremely helpful friendly neighbors at end of street to left after ours. On the nightstand is a great book that these neighbors wrote and published regarding their experiences since they started living off grid 13 years ago.

The neighborhood:

Nearby Hilo airport, Volcano's National Park, coin laundry in keaau & Volcano, 2 water fill up locations very close (2 water jugs provided), Keauu farmer market (everyday), Maku'u farmers market (sunday/Pahoa), J Hara general store, Gas stations, Keauu Shopping Plaza, Thai Thai Restaurant, Bowling alley (Volcano), Nice hike to end of street, and AMAZING STARGAZING from tree house and street.

Getting around:

Best to have rental car unless hitchhiking

How do damage deposits work?

In most cases, you don’t pay a damage deposit up front. Instead, we save your payment details securely and you’re only charged in the event of damage to the property.

Occasionally, you will pay a damage deposit up front as part of the total rental cost. In this case, the owner has 10 days after you check out to report any damage. If they don’t, we’ll return your deposit. If their claim is successful, we’ll deduct the agreed cost and return the remainder.

If Nicholas (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
