‘Ocean view’ only begins to describe what this one-of-a-kind Maine vacation rental house is about: ‘best view on the coast of Maine’, ‘you can’t help but feel one with the elements’, ‘no need to go anywhere, its all right here’, ‘unimpeded views exceeding 180 degrees:’ Penobscot Bay, Chickawaukee Lake, the Camden Hills, Blue Hill, Acadia National Park, Islesboro, Vinalhaven, North Haven, Monhegan Island, the Atlantic Ocean. Perched high on a mountaintop watch the Windjammer fleet romp along the coast from Camden, Rockport, and Rockland. Descend through woods and wildflowers on the north to this unique and breathtaking seven-acre property. Informal gardens and natural stone walls enhance the sense of privacy. Whether bird-watching (from hawks to hummingbirds), stargazing, weather-watching (‘I’d never seen a double rainbow before’), berry-picking, or simply lying in a hammock, enjoy cool sea breeezes, and the pink glow of the reflected sunset. The sunrise from Sunrise Summit is a sight to behold, ‘the full moon rise has to be the best on the planet’. Only five minutes from swimming and boating on Lake Chickawaukee and five minutes from a supermarket. Explore Rockland eight minutes from your doorstep: cafes, restaurants, shops, galleries, Farnsworth Museum, Strand Theater (movies and Bay Chamber concerts), windjammers, ferries, festivals, farmers markets, and even a boardwalk. Designed and built in 2009 by the owners/architects, including lighting, doors, couches, chairs, tables, beds, built-in cabinetry, in a style not easily categorized. Contemporary yet barn-like with four buildings connected by links, much in the old Maine tradition of adding space as the family grows. Soaring 22 foot ceilings, oiled douglas fir timber frames, generous, calm yet playful spaces with unique details fill this stunning 3500 square foot home. With 88 linear feet of eight foot high sliding glass doors, ‘the sea and sky have been invited inside’. Add 2000 square feet of deck overlooking layers of water from lake and bay to the ocean beyond…’the perfect expression of heaven on earth’.
From the front porch, enter with mud room and powder room (no tub or shower) tucked in on the right to the open plan kitchen/dining/living. The architects designed the kitchen in bamboo for its durability and soft look. At 16 ft x 16 ft with four foot square work island, new top-of-the-line appliances, there is room for many chefs. Dining area has five foot square oak table with 24 feet of glass sliders to the ‘cliffhanger’ deck. The two-story living room’s 32 feet of glass sliders open to the main deck and outdoor dining room, dramatic views beyond. Continuing through the living room, a glass enclosed link leads to a guest room with queen size bed, built-in desk, cedar closet, and water views. Diagonally across is a den/bedroom with 47 inch flat screen television, DVD collection (no cable), CD, MP3 player, cedar built-ins, desk. Choose two twin beds or king conversion. Opposite the guest room is a spacious bamboo bathroom with six foot soaking tub, separate shower and toilet. Cedar linen closet and laundry facilities with sink are inconspicuous yet convenient. Follow the gallery to a sliding cedar barn door and another glass enclosed link with eight foot desk and library. The adjacent master suite includes a king size bed, 16 feet of sliding glass to a private deck overlooking Rockland harbor. An 8′ x 10′ cedar closet/dressing room joins the master bath: oak cabinet with double copper sinks, toilet, cedar-lined 4′ x 8′ shower, double rain heads, hand sprays, and benches…’the ultimate shower experience’.
From the living room the open riser stair leads to a loft/balcony area with built-in queen size sleeping bunk, large built-in desk, and powder room (no tub/shower) Separated by a sliding cedar barn door is a guest room with 8 ft x 8 ft walk-in closet, two single beds (or king), and a private balcony with expansive ocean views. This room could also function nicely as an office. The two twin beds would then be moved to the loft/balcony (as shown in photo 36) or downstairs to the den (making it a four-bunk room).
