The capital of Spain, Madrid offers tourists an endless series of delights to discover. Start your day in Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city, then make your way to Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s most famous plaza. Here, wonder at the beauty of Casa de la Panadería, before heading to the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) and neighbouring Catedral de la Almudena. For the ultimate views, try the Teleferico Madrid cable car, or take the glass lift up the 92m of the Faro de Madrid communications tower. Art buffs shouldn’t miss Paseo del Prado, home to the Museo del Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia museums. By night, catch some flamenco at a tablao restaurant, or perhaps hit the tiles on a Hemingway bar crawl (is there anywhere in this city he didn’t drink?) Just be sure to line the stomach first – consider a roast from El Sobrino de Botín, which claims to be the world’s oldest restaurant. If you choose a self-catering Madrid apartment, you can also make the most of the incredible produce at Mercado de San Miguel, a food market home to a range of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, including the ubiquitous and un-missable Iberian ham.
When to go to Madrid
Madrid is a great place for tourists to visit at any time of year, with almost endless sunshine. Summers are hot and dry, while winter can be cold but relatively free of rain. Spring and autumn are the best times to travel to Madrid, however, with wild weather during April, May, June, September and October.
Getting to and around Madrid
Over 52 million tourists per year arrive in Madrid via Barajas airport. Once in the city, getting around is easy thanks to one of the best public transport systems in the world, particularly the metro.
